* BrainEatsSelf #8 - Piss, shit, f--- what the hell?

Last night I was watching 'Britz' on BBC America and couldn't help but notice that they have much more freedom when it comes to swearing and images on British TV than here in America. It seems that all words can be used and some nudity is acceptable (breasts), though I'm not sure how excessively. I kind of doubt HBO's 'Deadwood' would have been acceptable on regular over the air TV, even for what is apparently a much less uptight British audience. However, despite BBC America being a cable channel, some words that are okay over there (on non-cable channels) are still not acceptable here and it's confusing to think about. The word “shit” can be used freely on BBC America and FX Network shows and apparently only once per episode on TNT shows, but you can never use “fuck.” So as I'm watching Britz I can hear the word “shit” but “fuck” is silenced out. Which offends me more than the “offending” word. Why is it that American audiences are considered too immature to hear “harsh language” on their TV shows unless they pay for it on HBO or Showtime?
It may be the fault of network execs, it may be the fault of the FCC or, perhaps advertisers (all of them are evil). But these words are used in everyday life by practically everyone, why shouldn't they be on cable TV? I can understand not wanting the f-word or nudity on network TV simply because those shows are more popular and more kids are likely to be watching. But I still don't like it, since it should be up to the parents to decide what their kid sees and hears and not a corporate lawyer or politician.
I wish more people would complain about too much censorship rather than too little, because it really has gone too far. There are plenty of shows for little kids if that's what you're worried about, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network all exist and are doing quite well, so stop dumbing down my shows because somebody's 8 year old might be watching. It's ridiculous to have Jack Bauer go through 6 of the worst days you can imagine in which his entire life is ruined and never once say “fuck.” (Or use the bathroom, but really how would you write that in?)
